A small percentage of patients may require a month follow-up exam. Less than 5 percent of patients who are called back will go on to biopsy and of these patients only percent will have cancer.

If you are called back you may be asked to return for more mammographic images or an ultrasound. If you are concerned, you should feel free to ask about the reason for the call back and what exam may be performed next.

Once additional imaging has been performed, you will receive news about the outcome, whether you will need a short interval follow-up exam to ensure stability or possibly require a biopsy.

So the machine can capture images of your breasts, you will stand in front of it while a technologist places one breast at a time on a plate. Another plate above the breast will briefly press down while a machine takes a series of images. The technologist will then repeat the test with your other breast. Mammograms can be uncomfortable, or even painful, for some women, but the exam is brief. If you have undergone a mammogram, your imaging office may call you back for a breast ultrasound or other additional testing.
