KBPDX said older backyard chickens won't make a tasty meal: Their meat is tough, and they're not usually the breed of chicken that people enjoy eating. I could never give them up after they stop laying. Meat broilers are usually slaughtered at approximately 35 to 49 days of age, well before they become sexually reproductive at 5 to 6 months of age.
However, the bird's parents, often called " broiler -breeders", must live to maturity and beyond so they can be used for breeding. The main difference between a Cornish hen and a chicken is the mature size of the bird. Cornish hens rarely weigh much more than 2 pounds, while chickens can weigh double that. Cornish Cross also have problems with congestive heart failure [PDF]. They are bred to grow so quickly that their muscles often outgrow their internal organs, leading them to die prematurely.

Next year, I'm planning to raise real heritage- breed chickens for meat. They were developed for the commercial meat chicken market and have been dominating it for the past fifty years. We are counting 22 pounds of feed per bird to finish off a Red Ranger for 20 weeks. Per bird, we fed Cornish Cross 10 pounds of food for 9 weeks—an average of 1. Use: Developed as the ultimate meat bird , the Cornish has contributed its genes to build the vast broiler industry of the world, Its muscle development and arrangement give excellent carcass shape.
Cornish Cross chickens make outstanding meat birds for these reasons: They grow and feather rapidly. They efficiently convert feed into meat. They are broad breasted. About 9 or Many keep more per sq ft than that, but if you want them healthy, you should give them room just like any other breed. Plus the more space they have, the more they can move.
