How do keith banjo tuners work

I had a chance to ask Bill about that once and he acknowledged the problem and admitted it's the one problem with the tuners he hadn't been able to fix. Would I buy them again? Yes, but probably not the d-tuners - rather, the basic ones all around. I really like them. They tend to be a little bit longer than standard tuners, so you might need to verify they don't come into contact with the bottom of your case.

The angle of your headstock can affect this, and its length as well, since most Keith tuners are on the B and G strings, putting them the farthest "back" of all the tuners. They fit fine in my Stelling case, but in the cheap foam triangle case I got for short trips in the car, they bottom out, so I have to be extra careful using it.

I know people who have "Keith" tuners on all four strings, simply because they feel they are the best tuners on the market. Keith tuners have splined shafts which facilitate more precise adjustment of the buttons so they line up properly allowing hand alignment when using them. The knock off shafts are hexagonal. Any D tuner is going to be a bit more time consuming to tune.

However, unless you are planning on using them for some trick stuff, you don't have to lock the screws down. And if you are planning on doing tricks, just give them time to reach equilibrium if they have been subjected to extremes in temperature change. I wouldn't worry about them not fitting in your case. One of my banjos lives in a conventional case.

The other has done a good bit of traveling in a so called "soft" trapezoid case. No clearance issues with either case.

Yeah, Bela Fleck uses 4 of them for that very reason. He hardly ever plays with them. Something about how they transfer the tone quicker back to the head, to get the sound he wants. They have weights that clip to the peghead for that very purpose, and cheaper too. Hey, if Fleck is saying it, it has to be something to it right. Just like whatever Earl did was the gospel. But, I still don't know how he played with the strap on one shoulder, and 2 fingers planted against the head.

Tony Furtado wraps duct tape all over his head and tail piece, But, I don't think that will ever catch on. Some Guitar players have used clamp weights for years on their pegheads. I guess it's just a Progressive Banjo players thing, that he got from Progressive Guitar players, who probably got it from some Garage Band Guitar Player, who put a C-clamp on his peghead that he found laying around the garage during a break.

I have a pair of Keith tuners that I purchased about 50 years ago. They work as well today as they did when I purchased them. I have 4 mounted on my long neck which I use to play in open D on some songs. They work great for me.
