Southern Alligator Lizard. Quick and Cool Facts Alligator lizards live up to 15 years. Just like snakes, alligator lizards shed their skin in a single intact piece by essentially turning it inside out as they crawl out of it.

Observations suggest that they are able to eat animals close to or greater than their own body length. As with most lizards, they may detach their tail deliberately as a defensive tactic, however the tail will grow back, although generally not as perfectly as the original.

Tail regeneration is energetically expensive. Reproductive fitness and survival have been shown to be decreased during the regeneration process. Also, adults can be fed with just one single pinky mice once every two weeks. The temperature below the basking lamp should be about 80 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit, and the temperature of the rest of the tank anywhere between 65 and 75 degrees.

Lizards hate the smell of garlic so you can hang it round the house, or keep cloves of garlic near doors and windows to keep away the pests. You can also make a spray using garlic juice and water and spray it around the house.

Males are more swollen at the base of the tail than females and have a pair of enlarged scales near their vent cloaca. Females and juveniles have some color, but not nearly as bright. When out in the wild, the green tree monitor lizard will hunt and eat big roaches that grow up to over mm in length. Those roaches are big enough to get the lizards attention and this will be a good meal for them. Alligators can eat roaches but their huge will make go for other preys.

The two most common lizards we have are the Western fence lizard, also known as a blue belly, and the alligator lizard. Both eat insects, and the alligator also will eat snails. They prefer hunting and eating live creatures, so it would be difficult to round up a mess of ants, crickets and gnats to serve up. Alligator lizards are excellent pets, The easiest way to possess them is from your backyard.

They are fun pets and not difficult to look after. Upon close examination, you might see a fold of skin running down each side. This allows the body to expand when the lizard is breathing, full of food, or in the case of females, full of eggs.

Juveniles often are more metallic looking, with black sides and a bronze back. Alligator Lizards are very secretive; their first defence is to flee and hide.

The dropped tail acts as a decoy, distracting the potential predator. Over time, the lizard will regenerate a shorter, fatter tail. As the tail is an important fat reserve, tail autotomy usually is a tactic of last resort. As evidenced by the number of lizards with regenerated tails, however, it also is a successful tactic.

Alligator Lizards spend the winter hibernating in underground dens hibernacula. Upon emergence from the dens in spring, the mating chase begins. Male lizards forgo any displays. Instead, an interested male simply chases down a likely female, bites her head in his large jaws, and mates with her - sometimes for many hours!
