Yes, specialists do earn more, but they also spend more time and money on education. I am not here to dissuade anyone from becoming a specialist — but, money should not be the reason you want to pursue a certain specialty. But it is a misleading statistic. These averages are calculated while considering DO and MD physicians of all specialties. This means that when these numbers were calculated for MDs, the income of surgical and primary care physicians in the US participating in this survey were summed up and divided by the number of physicians.
Same with DOs. However, DOs are less represented in lucrative surgical specialties, and therefore the calculated average income of DOs is smaller than that of MDs. When DOs and MDs practice in the same specialty, their income is comparable. Anything we didn't cover?
