Fast forward a few years and I decided to stay in Uluwatu — I had my eyes on Balangan Beach but when I arrived, I hardly recognized the place! I went on a mission to find this same orphanage that I so fondly remembered from my initial visit. After driving for quite some time, I realized that the villa I was staying in was right opposite the orphanage, and the tar road I was driving on, was the exact same gravel and muddy path my scooter had broken down 2 years before.
Hence I still conder it a hidden gem in Bali! There are cows roaming the fields, chickens running all over and vast areas of land with no development. I love Balangan and I hope this post convinces you to pop over to my favorite beach and explore it for yourself. Balangan Beach is found on the far east of Bali in the Bukit Peninsula, more commonly known as Uluwatu. Known for its gorgeous white sandy shores and towering cliffs, Balangan Beach sure lives up to the high reputation that this region is famous for.
Pantai Balangan tops my list of best beaches in Uluwatu. The sand is soft and white. The sunsets are incredible and there are no luxurious resorts taking over the beachfront. And after visiting all the beaches in Uluwatu, I can safely say that Balangan Beach offers the best break for beginners.
Many people seem to agree with me on this one as the sea is often lined with rows of beginners on their longboards, all vying to catch that perfect wave.
Toward the far end of Balangan Beach, on the opposite side of the viewpoint, is a long, left break which is better suited for more experienced surfers. Sunset is prime time for visiting Balangan Beach, especially if you want to check out the viewpoint. But this is also when the crowds arrive! The Balangan viewpoint is a popular spot for wedding photoshoots, Instagrammers, models, and tourists who flock here in their numbers.
While travelers flock to Balangan Beach to catch a glimpse of the sunset, the best time to visit is during the day so that you can take full advantage of the gorgeous beach! Relax on a lounger under an umbrella, order a delicious nasi goreng and sip on a coconut or Bintang whilst watching the surfers or reading a book. Better yet, arrive around 3 pm so that you can do all that, and enjoy the sunset as well. If you want a cafe a little while back from the beach on Jalan Pantai Balangan is Cafe La Pasion which has some of the best pizza in the Uluwatu. Balangan Seaview Bungalow is wonderful. The accommodation has cute bungalows for about , a night and a nice pool and restaurant area.
But the thing I love the most about it is if you go out the back of the hotel a grassy area opens up right to the edge of Balangan cliff. From there you can look down and see the waves. Perfect for a morning surf check and even better to watch the sunset from. Another great place to stay in Balangan is just on the beach. In the last building the other end from the car park is The Point Beachfront Balangan.
