A recent report shows that the US is looking into its draft program, weighing options from mandating service for women to getting rid of the draft altogether. While a reinvigorated draft may alarm US citizens, nearly 60 countries around the world still have some form of conscription.

Some, like Israel, need the draft to ensure it can maintain its armed forces. Other nations have mandatory military service, where all citizens or a select group must sign up to serve their country.

Some nations have a combination of these systems. Several nations have compulsory or required military service as well as voluntary military service. The United States does not have compulsory military service; however, it is also included in this list because all males between the ages of 18 and 25 must register with the Selective Service to be drafted if needed. The United States has the highest defense spending budget of any country. Many nations have compulsory military service for up to one year.
