As your arm hangs from your shoulder, it is in stable equilibrium. If your arm is lifted to the side and then let go it will fall back down to the hanging position. The hanging arm is a stable position because the center of gravity of the arm is located below the base of support , in this case the shoulder.
When displaced lifted a bit the force of gravity acting on your arm will cause a torque that rotates your arm back down to the hanging position. In such cases, when an object is displaced from the equilibrium position and the resulting net forces or torques they cause move the object back toward the equilibrium position then these forces are called restoring forces.
The sloth takes advantage of stable equilibrium to save energy that humans spend on staying upright. If the sloth is displaced in any direction, the force of gravity automatically acts as a restoring force and returns the slot to its equilibrium position. If the book is lifted from one edge and then allowed to fall, it will come back to its original position.
Other examples of stable equilibrium are bodies lying on the floor such as chair, table etc. A stable equilibrium is a situation when the body is in such a position that all the forces acting on it completely balance each other and there is no net force on it. Examples include a weight suspended by a spring or a brick lying on a level surface. Explain the types of stability with suitable examples. Conditions for equilibrium require that the sum of all external forces acting on the body is zero first condition of equilibrium , and the sum of all external torques from external forces is zero second condition of equilibrium.
These two conditions must be simultaneously satisfied in equilibrium. Stable equilibrium occurs if after a body has been displaced slightly it returns to its original position when the displacing force has been taken away.
From: Engineering Principles for Electrical Technicians, An unstable critical point is one that is not stable. All suspensions, including coarse emulsions, are inherently thermodynamically unstable. They will, through random motion of the particles over time, aggregate because of the natural and dominant tendency to decrease the large specific surface area and excess surface energy. Stability is the ability of an aircraft to correct for conditions that act on it, like turbulence or flight control inputs.
For aircraft, there are two general types of stability: static and dynamic. A handstand is the act of supporting the body in a stable, inverted vertical position by balancing on the hands. A solid body submitted to three forces whose lines of action are not parallel is in equilibrium if the three following conditions apply : The lines of action are coplanar in the same plane The lines of action are convergent they cross at the same point The vector sum of these forces is equal to the zero vector.
If all eigenvalues of J are real or complex numbers with absolute value strictly less than 1 then a is a stable fixed point; if at least one of them has absolute value strictly greater than 1 then a is unstable.
